Happy New Year to all the familiar faces that make Carmichael Salon & Color Bar feel like home! We’ve settled in to our new location at 166 Geary St, 5th Floor, and we’re eager to thank all of you for your continued loyalty as we grow here in Union Square. We’ve expanded our service menu, gained new skills, and added fresh talent to our team. All the while we couldn’t have done it without YOU, and to show our appreciation we are hosting 3 weeks of fun rewards and pampering.

Friday Feb 3rd: Hairdreams will be joining Sandy to provide personal in-depth consultations about the Art of Hair Extension. The 15 minute service (must book in advance) enters you into a raffle to win hair strands.

Feb 7th – 11th: Celebrate and love yourself – be our date for Valentines! Anytime during that week, post a Valentines wish on our Facebook Wall and be entered into another raffle for 1 month of free salon services!

Wednesday Feb 8th -Celebrate your unique Carmichael hair color with a fun custom shirt to match.

Thursday Feb 9th – Bring a girlfriend and have a girl’s day of glamour. After your blow-out and make-up session, we’ll snap your photo while you vamp on the red carpet. Your new guest will receive 50% off their service as well. Talk about star treatment!

Friday Feb 10th – Do you love the floral arrangements in the salon? Take a piece of that home with you on this day. Each guest will receive a red rose, curtesy of F’loreal.

Saturday Feb 11th – Pop the bubbly, we’ll be closing the week with a bang! Invite a friend who has never been to the salon and that guest will receive 50% their service. Put down that new years resolution already and enjoy red velvet cupcakes and appetizers.

Cranberry Salsa Recipe

Rebekah Nummer shared this recipe from one of her favorite cookbooks, Hay Day Country Market Cookbook by Kim Rizk.

I love prepping this salsa the day before Thanksgiving. It is a light and easy snack when served with sweet potato or blue corn chips before your feast. It is amazing with your turkey dinner and to die for on your left-over turkey sandwiches!

CRANBERRY SALSA

makes two cups

1/2 cup coarsely chopped onion
1 fresh jalapeno pepper, seeded, deveined, and chopped into a few large pieces
1 clove garlic, smashed and peeled
1 1/2 cups fresh or frozen cranberries
1/2 small juice orange, unpeeled, scrubbed, quartered, and seeded
3 tablespoons white wine vinegar
1 tablespoon sugar
2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
1/2 teaspoon coarse (kosher) salt

Combine the onion, jalapeno, and garlic in a food processor, and pulse until finely chopped.
Add the cranberries, orange quarters, vinegar, sugar and orange juice, and pulse until uniformly coarse and chunky.
Season to taste with salt.
Allow to rest at room temperature for 30 minutes for the flavors to develop.
Refrigerate salsa until it is thoroughly chilled, 2 hours.

Big thanks to everyone that voted for Carmichael Salon and stylists in this year’s Best of the Bay poll by San Francisco Bay Guardian. The issue will hit newsstands next Wednesday, July 27th and we are looking forward to checking out all the winners. Couldn’t help but notice that there were some interesting categories to choose from (best fetish shop?!) and we hope you had as much fun as we did mentioning your favorite local businesses.

To show our appreciation we held a raffle for anyone that cast their vote, and right now we are busily collecting the names from our blog and Facebook wall. SO MANY VOTES, SO LITTLE TIME!

San Francisco Beauty Expo

This upcoming weekend several members of Carmichael Salon will be competing in the SF Beauty Expo! This event is a fundraiser for SF Fashion Week during August, and is hosted by the San Francisco Fashion and Merchants Alliance (SFFMA). A team of 1 stylist and 1 makeup artist will create an original avant-garde look for the models who will be walking the runway in designs by up and coming designers. After the looks are created a panel of judges will decide which team walks away with the glory!

We are excited to show off our creativity and talent during this night of beauty and fashion. If you are a fellow member of the beauty industry this will be a fabulous networking event as well! Its all happening Saturday, May 28, 2011, with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are available online for $10 and $12 at the door. The dress code calls for fashionably chic. We’ll see you there!

The royal wedding is here and everyone is in a frenzy! Even if you aren’t literally marrying a prince, every bride wants to feel like a princess on her big day. Here are some quick and easy tips to keep your day running smoothly:

Keep lips soft using your toothbrush with a mixture of sugar, honey and olive oil. Create a paste and gently massage in a circular motion for 1 minute. Olive oil is well-known for its moisturizing properties, while honey contains mild alpha-hydroxy acids to aid the sugar in exfoliation. Ready to kiss the bride?
Don’t let a spill ruin your dress! Keep an alcohol-based hairspray on hand and quickly saturate wine, lipstick, or ink marks. The stain will attract to the microbeads of the hairspray. As the spray dries the molecular chains connect, the spray becomes stiff, and the stain will evaporate before your eyes.
Avoid using a moisturizer with SPF- it can create an unflattering ghostly white cast on your skin under flash photography.
Waterproof makeup is your best friend- even if you aren’t typically the crying type. There will be a lot of emotions through the day and you never know! Groomsmen will stay polished with a dab of concealer and a swipe of translucent powder.
Make fragrance last all day by applying to pulse-points fresh out of the shower while skin is still damp. This will help the essential oils present in the perfume readily absorb into your skin.

We’re all chasing the sunshine, but the powerful UVA and UVB rays can be harmful for our hair if we don’t take precautions.
